Norman Petty Studios
The Vault Series - Volume #9
29 songs – 12
tracks originally unreleased *
6 panel, full color eco-wallet with session info on each track
We delve deeper into the Petty Studio vault for this
featuring a 29 tracks for another crystal clear compilation of quality productions.
Material ranges from mid '60s garage style rock,
venturing into psychedelic rock, sunshine pop and baroque folk of the late '60s.
While some have erroneously commented that "Norman couldn't stand the new type of music",
he actually embraced it as a challenge and enjoyed the chance to experiment with such
extreme sounds and something so foreign to his musical roots.
Some of these releases didn't get a U.S. release, but one of Norman's strengths was
his international ties and ability to get recordings issued overseas.
The Minute Men, hailing from Florida, start things off with a track only released in Holland;
followed by one of Norman's productions for The Pebbles while he was touring Belgium.
Next up is an acoustic demo by Michael Brewer, who within a few years was topping the charts
as part of the duo "Brewer & Shipley" with their hit "One Toke Over The Line".
Here we feature his very first recording effort in the days he was performing as an acoustic solo act.
Bill Eustis was an Oklahoma artist whose recording only issued on a Belgium label;
followed by some New Mexico garage rock from Tony Martinez & The Creations.
You can hear the fun Chita Rivera had with The Fireballs on the unissued "Ruby Rebel;
and Colorado groups The Monocles, Trolls, Daniel Paul Revelation, Livin' Ends & Chandells make an appearance.
On the local side, we have The Soul Agents (backing back for Jim Solley of Lubbock);
Rockin' Chair, Shi Guys, Group Axis & Apple-Glass Cyndrom;
a few touring acts from the Vegas and lounge circuit: The Noels and Fran Wald Four;
along with Happy Return of Missouri; Gentleman's Agreement from Utah; and Sledgehammer of Idaho.
From Hobbs, NM teens Mike Burnett and Alyse Paradiso were backed by The Fireballs and named "The Brentwoods" by Norman.
Mike returned on his own later in the year again backed by The Fireballs
and recorded a groovy little psych track titled "Mattie Jo's".
Although this has been released on an overseas compilation,
we found even more studio fun and bizarre effects on the instrumental backing track.
We have added 2 new tracks to the final 4 track mix tape, for a new mix.
The result shows that there was some experimental grooviness happening in that little 7th Street Studio!
4 tracks are from mono masters while the remaining tracks are fresh multi-track stereo mixes.
This compilation proves that amid vastly changing sounds and
productions in the music world, Norman could keep up with the best of them!
